WHOLE DRUM TRUTH

3 Drummers!
Tootie Heath,
John Trentacosta, Lorin Beinvenu

Bert Dalton–piano & Colin Deuble–bass

The Whole Drum Truth puts three drumers at center stage. Led by legendary drummer Tootie Heath, the music is all-percussion, but melodies shine through, because of the drummers' exquisite subtlety on their tuned instruments. You'll hear pieces made famous by Art Blakey, Max Roach and others, as well as well-known jazz tunes by composers like Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane– minus the melody. Astute listeners will recognize the tunes from their rhythmic structure alone!

After the Whole Drum Truth, the TOOTIE HEATH TRIO
(Burt Dalton, piano; Colin Deuble, bass) will take the stage for some swinging straight ahead jazz!

Tootie Heath

Youngest of the three jazz Heath brothers. Tootie's first record was also John Coltrane's first as a leader. John Lewis chose Tootie to be the last drummer for the Modern Jazz Quartet. Tootie was a regular member of bands led by Don Cherry, Kenny Drew, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Art Farmer / Benny Golson, Frederic Gulda (in a trio with Ron Carter), Tommy Flanagan, Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Milt Jackson, J.J. Johnson, Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, Bobby Timmons, Lester Young, Cedar Walton and Ben Webster.

John Trentacosta

A native Staten Islander, Trentacosta moved to New Mexico in 1992 after having served tenures in the jazz groups of  Jimmy Knepper, Chuck Wayne, Don Joseph and the legendary Al Porcino Big Band. In 1994, he formed the jazz quintet Straight Up, producing two highly acclaimed albums. He is also a music educator, radio host, and co-founder of “The Santa Fe Music Collective”.

Lorin Bienvenu

Bienvenu was born and raised in Santa Fe and is a former student of Trentacosta’s. He studied with Peter Erskine in Los Angeles, and has gigged regionally with Chris Ishee, Brian Wingard, Jon Gagan, and the Shiners Club Jazz Band.

The Whole Drum Truth

The idea originated in Tootie Heath's mind as a "joy project"– bringing together jazz drum legends in historic all-percussion performances. Former members of the Whole Drum Truth read like a Who’s Who of jazz drummers: Ed Thigpen, Billy Hart, Louis Hayes, Kenny Washington, Ben Riley, Sylvia Cuenca, and more. With its emphasis on rhythmic collaboration at the highest level, it’s easy to see why Rick Van Horn, Senior Editor of Modern Drummer, called the original ensemble “A stellar gathering of jazz drumming talent . . . sheer joy and percussive intensity.
